How Axia’s community involvement helped create an Olympian

By Jason Mudd

Jason Mudd and Poe Pinson.Twenty-two years ago, Axia helped a small, passionate group in Fernandina Beach, Florida, accomplish their mission: raising $500K to build a skate park.

Operation Skate aimed to give the community a free, fun, and safe place to skateboard, roller skate, and ride motocross bikes. But the park ended up shaping a top U.S. skateboarder and Olympic hero.

After starting her skateboarding journey at the park when she was 4, Poe Pinson, now 19, represented the small town in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. She earned fifth in the women’s street skateboarding finals, leading the U.S. team.

When Pinson came home, Fernandina Beach renamed the park after her, presented her with a key to the city, and threw a parade to celebrate her success (some called it a “Poe”-rade).

Making it happen

Axia is proud to see its efforts' long-lasting, unexpected, and extraordinary impact.

As part of Operation Skate, Axia’s team contributed over 1,500 hours of agency services, including public relations, PSA script writing, poster design, website design, and more. They also leveraged relationships with influential local, state, and national officials, business executives, and skateboarding icons like Tony Hawk, Mike Vallely, and Rob Dyrdek to help make the grassroots mission a reality.

Within 30 days of launching the PR campaign, Operation Skate doubled its fundraising revenue. It also gained weekly media coverage and significantly increased its advocate and volunteer base.

The result? A thriving skate park that local youth enjoy every day.
