1. How to make an iconic brand uncool — Nike’s CEO fiasco

  • Nike CEO John Donahoe stepped down after a tenure of missteps and unsuccessful PR gambles. Following the announcement, Nike’s shares climbed 8% in extended trading. Currently, Nike shares are down 25% year to date.
  • Donahoe’s departure follows a series of misfires including Nike’s all-in shift to a direct-to-consumer sales strategy and failure to produce the innovative footwear the brand is known for.
  • Nike lost sight of its customers' needs. Donahoe led the company to a record low, leaving his successor to pick up the pieces. Good PR always considers the audience first and doesn’t bet it all on untested strategies.

2. Proposed AI regulations showcase the need for clear AI policies

  • California’s governor vetoed a controversial bill proposing AI regulations that, if passed, would have significantly impacted corporate communications professionals. The bill included AI safety measures, regulations to reduce misinformation, and an AI “kill switch” for emergencies.
  • Though the bill didn’t pass, leaders should take these proposed regulations seriously. As other states consider similar bills, bans and fines may be just the beginning for strict generative AI policies.
  • For safety, transparency, and alignment as regulations evolve, organizations need a clear AI policy and code of ethics internally and externally.
