Developing a cybersecurity crisis response

Posted by Axia Public Relations

Consumer packaged goods

When a consumer packaged goods company experienced a cybersecurity crisis event, within one hour, their public relations agency of record helped the client solve its issues and created a corporate communication response to the impacted consumers and suppliers who received the phishing email.

The business challenge

Management at the e-commerce retailer contacted the PR firm about a phishing incident, a suspicious email sent from their primary customer outreach email addresses they didn't send.

The solution

The PR agency knew to review logs and headers from the email to determine the machine the phishing email was sent from. Axia also connected the brand with its company’s managed security service provider, which began offering the brand services immediately because it did not yet have an incumbent MSSP.

The results

Within one hour, Axia:

  • Identified the issue
  • Connected the client with a trusted MSSP
  • Consulted the client to create policies and make internal changes to control, manage, and install security methods, such as implementing 2FA to all of its email addresses and stopping the use of an expected email address of info@domain.com to make it less easily targeted
  • Sent an external communication to all impacted consumers:
